Beyond Ending the Violence Against Women

“If we are to fight discrimination and injustice against women we must start from the home for if a woman cannot be safe in her own house then she cannot be expected to feel safe anywhere.”
– Aysha Taryam

Last December 13, 2017, the 16 Days of Activism to end Violence against Women and Girls, which started on the 25th of November, has reached its closing.

UN Women and partners led hundreds of events worldwide, all with one particular goal. And that goal was to completely put an end to violence against women, for it has become a growing pandemic affecting one in three women globally.

Organized by the UN Secretary-General as part of their campaign to eliminate Violence against Women by 2030, it calls upon the government and the public alike to take the necessary actions.

From marches and concerts to sports days, each day was very eventful. Iconic buildings were lit up in orange to stir attention during the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence.

Orange has been designated as the color of the UNiTE campaign as it symbolizes hope and a violence-free world. The call is for everyone to “Orange the World” and play their part in what could be the most successful move to a better future.

The commemoration was overshadowed by recent terrorist attacks in Bir al-Abed, Egypt and left many women behind as widows and in trauma. The movement provided comfort and optimism that if they continue to be resilient, they can come out stronger from these difficult times.

You can take part without having to leave your homes. Like all good practices, it should start at the smallest level. You must establish the importance of gender equality within your families.

Parents should teach their children to give the same amount of respect to boys and girls. Raising the next generation that way is how you can show support to the cause if you don’t know where to start.
