Green Hero is the Ocean Clean up Garbage Patch

This week’s Green Hero is the Ocean Cleanup!

The Ocean Cleanup estimates that of the 5 trillion (!) pieces of plastic floating in our oceans.

There are 5 big garbage patches in the world and The Ocean Cleanup will target the largest one: the Great Pacific Garbage Patch between Hawaii and California. They say 50% will be cleaned up within 5 years!

Now that’s more than we can do by reducing our plastic consumption and recycling.

How will the Ocean Cleanup do this?

The Ocean Cleanup uses the passive method to catch plastic.
1. The floater. This contraption stays in the water.
2. The screen. It will catch the plastic and the fish swim underneath. No nets = not harmful for sea life!
3. The anchor. Goes down for about 600 meters and slows down the current so that it goes the speed of plastic.
4. The ship. Then a ship comes by and pumps out the plastic using a pump and belts.

Read more about the technology here.

At the moment the Ocean Cleanup is on trial, but in 2018 it’s set to begin and by 2020 they want to scale up and target more garbage patches.

THANK YOU, THE OCEAN CLEANUP!
